Cheer Classes

Spring 2024

Gem City’s cheer classes offer athletes (boys and girls) the opportunity to gain the skills needed for either a high-school or all-star cheerleading squad. Classes largely focus on tumbling though some emphasis is placed on jumps.

Read below for a description of classes and times. Also, don’t forget to check out Gem City’s other classes and offerings, including gymnastics, tumbling, and birthday parties.

Beginning Cheer

(No Experience Required, Ages 12+, Co-ed)

This hour long class is designed for junior high and high school aged boys and girls. The class focuses on mastering basic tumbling skills: handstands, cartwheels, roundoffs, and back handsprings. Developing a fluid and powerful roundoff is a particular focus. A back handspring without a spot must be mastered before moving onto the advanced cheer class. Near the end of each session we have in-class evaluations to better inform each family on the progression of their athlete, and to inform the athlete of the class they are eligible to enroll for moving forward.

Advanced Cheer

(Successful Completion of Beginning Cheer)

Enrollment in advanced cheer requires a back handspring without a spot. This class focuses standing tumbling, multiple back handsprings connected, and more advanced skills such as back tucks. This is a one hour class.

We hold tryouts to form our all-star cheer squad here at Gem City around May. Full information on tryouts is posted on our website and social media months ahead of time, and we offer an information meeting before tryouts each year.

It is a competitive program that participates in USASF sanctioned meets. All team members are required to compete at every meet. Competition routines are typically 2 1⁄2 minutes in length. They are packed with stunts, dances, cheers, chants, and tumbling. Every team needs a combination of bases, flyers, tumblers, and dancers.  Most of these well rounded athletes are capable of performing all of these skills. (Athletes without a back handspring should tryout. We look for potential beyond that one skill. Plus, we’re confident in our coaching abilities to get our athletes to the level they need to be.) Scheduled Break Reminder: No classes or practices will be held from Friday, March 29 to Sunday, March 31 for Easter.
Classes resume Monday 4/1.
