QuincyIL With a wide variety of special events offered year-round, Quincy is not only a wonderful place to live but a fun place to visit as well. From opera performances to sporting events to chili cookoffs, there’s something for everyone here.

Quincy boasts of four major historical districts. Each shows a wide array of architectural styles and displays the affluence of the period from 1850-1930 when Quincy was the most prominent river town in Illinois. Homes and commercial buildings reflect Italianate, Greek and Renaissance Revival, Romanesque, Queen Anne and Prairie designs. Each year, the Quincy Preserves hosts an architectural tour that opens these historic buildings to the public.

While other downtown areas may be struggling, Quincy has experienced a resurgence in its Historic Quincy Business District. In addition to serving as the hub for professional services, the downtown has unique locally-owned shopping opportunities, upscale dining and abundant entertainment. Big box retailers prefer Broadway Street, a six-mile, four-lane stretch of abundant shopping that includes the Quincy Mall, recently under new ownership.

Quincy also boasts of a large modern Civic Center, a raceway, nearby county fair grounds, a summer collegiate baseball team called the Quincy Gems, and four golf courses. Civil War re-enactments take place in our Riverview Park, local farmers bring their goods to sell at the Farmer’s Market, visitors can feed the ducks that live in South Park, and the Quincy Park Band provides musical entertainment every week during the summer months.

The “Villa Kathrine,” a Moorish Castle that overlooks the Mississippi River serves as Quincy’s Tourist Information Center. The sole example of Mediterranean architecture along the river, it was built early in the 19th century and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
